To celebrate Valentine's Day, Emma and I went out for dinner. Alone. Just the two of us.
It was the first time since William was born that we've left him with anyone who wasn't a family member or a very close friend. The experience was horrifying.
As we sat down for dinner, Emma pronounced proudly: "Well, I feel completely relaxed. I just feel really confident that William is being well cared for."
At the precise same moment, I was fighting back thoughts of our babysitter suffocating William with a pillow.
"Good!" I said, and forced a smile.
As the dinner progressed, Emma added: "Gosh. I feel bad that we haven't even called to check in!"
"Oh, she'll call us if she needs us," I answered, as another murder scenario flashed through my mind.
As it turns out, we had written the wrong phone number for the restaurant on the piece of paper we'd left for her, so she could not have raised the alarm on that number, but in our paranoid state we'd also give her both of our cell phone numbers together with a Yahoo Map of the precise location of the restaurant.
Various additional unseemly fears presented themselves from the dark recesses of my brain during my Filet Mignon, but eventually the Pinot Noir numbed whichever cells conjure up paranoia, and I too started to think that William would probably be okay.
The truth is, (let's call her Josephine) works at Emma's gym, sees William and Emma most days, and is a delightfully caring woman.
Unfortunately, I no longer go to the gym and had to base a decision to leave our precious son with her on the impressions she made during the fifteen minutes it took for her to step across our threshold, take off her shoes, giggle delightedly at the sight of William, and make herself comfortable on the couch.
"Go! Have fun!" Josephine said, as she waved us off.
"Don't kill my son." I thought, as we walked down the path.
So, okay...I'm relaxed about it now. Josephine is lovely, and we're really looking forward to having her babysit for us again some time. I'm reassured.
But if you know any different, you'll let me know, right?
